Surviving Freshman Year at Bentley College

I am currently going to be a senior at Bentley College in Waltham, MA, so I have a lot of experience and know how things work at Bentley. As a freshman at Bentley College you will be living in the Tree Dorms, Slade Hall, or Miller Hall. If you have a choice I would highly recommend that you choose to live in the Tree Dorms because this is where the majority of freshman are going to be living, so there will be more activity going on in the building and you will meet more people. Slade Hall is across the parking lot from the Tree Dorms, so that would be my second choice and Miller Hall is small and kind of isolated, so that would be my last choice for freshman housing. If Bentley offers you the opportunity to live with upper class men I would decline their offer and live with freshman. It will make the transition into college life a lot easier.

I registered for classes during orientation and it is kind of a hectic time. Usually your first two years at Bentley you are focusing on satisfying your general education requirements, so registration your first two years is pretty easy. The classes that you take will pretty much be chosen for you, but you will still have the opportunity to select which professor you would like to take. I recommend that before you attend the Bentley orientation that you go on RateMyProfessors and SyllabusCentral and do a little research on professors so that you end up with some good professors your freshman year.

As a freshman you will mostly be eating at Season’s Dining Hall, Harry’s Corner, Boloco, and A&W. Your meal plan covers unlimited entries into Season’s Dining Hall, but the quality of food there isn’t too good. At Harry’s Corner you can use your discretionary money and Harry’s is good for getting a sub, pizza, or fried food like mozzarella sticks or chicken fingers. Harry’s is also close to freshman housing, so you will probably be going there a lot. Boloco and A&W are on lower campus, which is a good walk, but I think it is worth it for Boloco. Boloco is my favorite food on campus and once again they take discretionary money.

As a freshman your classes should be pretty easy. After freshman year your classes will become a lot more difficult, so I recommend that you buckle down and get some good grades to boost your GPA freshman year. It will be difficult to recover your GPA from a bad freshman year. There are two very easy things you can do to boost your GPA as a freshman. The first is to just go to class and the second is to always do your homework. Even if you homework isn’t going to be collected I still highly advise that you just do it on your own and try to stay disciplined. It is too easy to put your homework off and then get really behind and not be able to learn everything before a mid-term or final. Be sure to pace yourself throughout the semester and you should do fine.

Teaching With Technology About Snowflakes, Wilson Bentley, Perseverance, & Snow

Why is it common knowledge that every single snowflake is unique? Who had the time to figure this out?

The fact lies in the historical story of “Snowflake Bentley.” Wilson A. Bentley (1865-1931) was a man who loved snow and went on to extensively study and photograph snowflakes.

The story of his life is documented in “Snowflake Bentley” by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. This book combines biographical data with scientific information. The illustrations are spectacular and the book is a Caldecott winner.

His story is one of discovery, yet also perseverance. Imagine the work that goes into trying to capture a photograph of a snowflake. Then add to that the time era he was working in and the technology tools he had available.

After reading about Snowflake Bentley the fun continues. By visiting the website of the museum that honors him, the snowflakes that he photographed are available to view. One by one, the snowflakes can be viewed and the intricate details exposed. Snowflake Bentley’s dream was to be able to share his passion of snowflakes with the world. If he were alive today he’d be greatly impressed with the ability of everyone in the world to view his work through the internet.

Besides being able to view the snowflake photographs, the internet makes it possible for people today to create virtual snowflakes. Fold the paper, cut little chunks out, open to see what you’ve made, and then continue to cut some more. All of this can be accomplished without a single paper scrap on the floor! Students love to make virtual snowflakes all year round. It is one of their favorite websites to visit. Save some of the snowflakes and import them into your favorite software to add snowflake poetry or stories.

Snowflake Bentley is also an excellent example of how multiple genres can be mixed within one story. There are online resources that allow students to choose a topic and pieces of writing to create their own multi-genre page of writing.

The story of Snowflake Bentley (by Jacqueline Briggs Martin) is an excellent way to kick off any unit about snow, seasons, water cycle, or states of matter.

Bentley Versus Aston

Prestige has forever been Bentley’s well-deserved reputation for building automobiles with unmatched creature comforts and incomparable style. Even with a change of ownership and remarkable design changes, Bentley’s style and comfort departments remain steadfast. But you may need slow-mo to see those attributes found in Bentley’s Continental GT. This sports coupe-with its W 12, 6-liter turbocharged, 500 horsepower engine-is no mere GT poser. It’s the real deal.

Bentley’s four-door sedans seemingly have enough cabin space to comfortably accommodate a classical quartet; but this two-door sports coupe, by comparison, is sleek and trim. The GT’s creature comforts are nonetheless bountiful as the Continental’s interior comes in nine, exotic, natural-wood trims. Although you’ll need to leave the quartet at home, the robust entertainment center comes standard with a six-disc CD changer, GPS navigational aid, telephone pre-wiring, and voice-activated controls for the telephone. The seats are sumptuous with supple leather, offering 14 separate adjustments, including lumbar support and power memory.

In balancing its swiftness, the Continental GT rides on five-spoke, 19-inch, painted alloy wheels. The glide in the ride stems from an adaptive-variable suspension with automatic load leveling, a front independent, double-wishbone suspension with air springs and a rear stabilizer bar.

Yes, the Continental GT is definitely a ramped-up rider compared to Bentley’s revered, classic four-door sedans. Distinctively it retains the lavish qualities expected of a Bentley, but you will have to focus faster to take it all in.

The British aren’t coming! They are already back and riding high with the Aston Martin DB9 in its royal fleet. The DB9 is a lightweight only on the scale, weighing in nearly 1,500 pounds lighter than the formidable Bentley Continental GT. However, when it comes to the momentous performance/decadence ratio demands of drivers in this GT fraternity, the DB9 metes out numbers that merit its champion-level status. The overseer of the 911 Turbo, Dr. Ulhrich Bev, Aston Martin’s CEO, delivers terrifically with a bevy of amenities that make the DB9 menacingly mouthwatering.

The DB9’s frame is a revolutionary VH(vertical/horizontal) aluminum-bonded platform, which provides maximum rigidity, minimal weight and a perfect 50/50 weight balance. Combine that with a double-wishbone suspension and a 450 horsepower,6.0-liter V 12 engine, it is no problem with the DB9 going from zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds. This roadster ramps out at top speed of 186 mph shortly thereafter. The six-speed, auto-manual transmission operates smoothly with magnesium paddle shifters that infuse the fluid feel of a true manual transmission. And the low-RPM responsiveness is nothing short of magnificent.

Amenities come in droves on this tabula rasa, as customers are encouraged to take full advantage ofAston Martin’s personalization program. Exterior paint options are limitless. The interior consists of handcrafted, stitched leather seats, and the door and interior trim come in exotic walnut, mahogany or bamboo. There is also a Linn 950-watt, Dolby Pro Logic II audio-system option to boot.

What is even better is that Dr. Bev promises that this is only the beginning of what promises to be the new British invasion!

Bentley Announces Brooklands’ 1st Year Production is Sold Out

Bentley, maker of Bentley oxygen sensor, announced last Wednesday that the first year’s production has already been sold out on its Arnage-based Brooklands super coupe. The British manufacturer of luxury automobiles and Grand Tourers said that deliveries to customers will start sometime from January to March of 2008.

It was a bit surprising that the first editions would be acquired so fast by collectors, but the reality of it seems to have heavily blown out the officials of Bentley Motors Limited. Franz-Josef Paefgen, the Chairman at the same time the Chief Executive of Bentley said that the interest in Brooklands since it has been unleashed in Geneva has surpassed their expectations. He claimed that it is surely to be destined to become a collector’s classic. Bentley has set a limit of 550 units for the lifetime production of the Brooklands.

Powered by a 530-horsepower twin-turbo 6.75-liter V8, the hand-assembled Brooklands have official performance specs that include a maximum speed of 184 mph and a 0-60-mph time of 5.0 seconds. The British auto manufacturer said that the engine is the most powerful V8 it has ever produced. Aside from this, Bentley Motors Limited further claimed that the engine also develops the highest torque output of any V8 auto engine in the world at 774 pound-feet.

About Bentley Motors

Founded by W.O. Bentley in 1919, the company was established when the first Bentley engine blasted into reality at New Street Mews, London. Though the 1920’s, W.O’s company went from strength to strength as it has continuity in the developing series of acclaimed motor cars and a wide array of racing victors to prove their outstanding performance. Their successes were rewarded with five outright victories at Le Mans from 1924 to 1930 and a sixth in 2003.

During those days, the company had mission statements in the words of W.O.: “To build a good car, a fast car, the best in class”. Those words are just as relevant today as they continue to inform and remind the company with their beliefs, actions and aspirations for the future.

Bentley Motors is located in Crewe, England since 1946 and owned since 1998 by Volkswagen AG. The company is committed in making responsive and powerful Grand Tourers with the strength to cross continents at a certain speed, and drive in stunning comfort and style.

Bentley Motors describes their products using different words such as “handcrafted luxury, distinctive design, breathtaking power and performance, a refined and exhilarating driving experience”. And they claim that the combination of these adjectives makes their brand so unique.

Bentley Continental GT Speed

The Bentley Continental GT is the worlds fastest, 4 seater car every part of the car is beautifully crafted. The Bentley Continental GT is one of the most desirable cars in the world today, appreciated for both the sumptuous luxury it provides and the levels of performance it can deliver. As such the tyres for this car have been specially designed to provide excellent comfort and stability when cruising and high levels of grip when enjoying the driving experience that the Bentley has to offer.

The Bentley Continental GT has been praised not just for style and luxury but also for its performance and road holding. The Kistler RoaDyn system was used measure real life loads on the suspension components and assemblies to allow minimum un-sprung mass to be combined with durability. The Bentley Continental GT 6.0 is immensely comfortable like driving in an Armani suit, and is rocket fast with breathtaking acceleration. It has quietly understated good looks, a real wolf in sheep’s clothing!

The Bentley Continental GT Speed one of the the fastest Bentley cars ever produced for the road. The engine ratings on the standard Continental GT still remain, though. The laws of physics were drawn up to prevent things as massive as the 2009 Bentley Continental GT Speed from traveling so quickly. With 600 hp being dropped onto the pavement through all four tyres, this 5,200-pound Bentley manages to counteract gravity by accelerating with tremendous thrust. And still people try and improve it as does Bavarian exotic auto tuners Mansory, designers of the $2.5 million Vincero Bugatti Veyron, have unveiled their latest creation , a killer matte black Bentley Continental GT Speed. Mansory specializes in souped-up supercars, and the GT Speed is no exception with its 6.0L W12 boosted by 75 hp for a total of 685 hp plus an additional 111 lb-ft of torque allowing it to hit a new top speed of about 216 mph.

Oh My God…is That a Bentley?

When it comes to promoting a business every attention grabbing scheme is employed even when it means dressing up your luxury car out with signwriting, a roof rack and plumbing gears. Ouch!

Many car owners would think a hundred times before altering their luxury vehicles come to think of it even those with cars that are not so expensive will think many times before turning their cars into a circus ride but Mr. Peter Vandenberg has proven himself the exception. He fearlessly alters his “Bentley” and turns it into a plumbing vehicle.

Mr. Peter Vandenberg has spent about $360,000 on a new Bentley to turn it into a plumbing van. Although it is true that many would not agree on such sacrilegious act but he said that the vehicle has proven very effective so far in getting the attention that he wanted for his business.

The Stanley Pt man has been turning heads all around the shore and most are enthralled by the sight of a Bentley turned plumbing van. I’m sure that most of them were thinking if Mr. Vandenberg is still in his right mind to do such a terrible thing to a Bentley.

Mr. Peter Vandenberg has been in the plumbing business for six months and has previously made his living in property development in London and New Zealand. According to Mr. Vandenberg buying a Bentley and turning it into a plumbing vehicle is a bit of a practical joke on the industry but he said that so far the response that he gets from the public has been excellent and that for him is the most important thing.

“People have been coming out of bars and taking photographs of it. All the boys want to be taken for a drive.”

While some might think that it is a sacrilege to alter such a car, even other Bentley owners have seen the joke so far, stated Mr. Vandenberg. The big question is: were they amuse to see a Bentley turned into a joke?

Mr. Vandenberg also said that his competition has been a little more subdued, “There’s just smiles and hmmm.”

Although having a luxury plumbing van has been an exciting thing but Mr. Vandenberg has also admitted that using a luxury car isn’t all plain sailing. He has to clean it twice a day and the 12 cylinder, six-liter engine guzzles an average of $120 worth of fuel every two days. “But if it gets the company noticed then it’s a good thing,” he says.

He also said that his wife was not the least excited about the whole concept. “I’d already bought it but I told her I was test driving it for a week and a half. She’s come around now,” he says. Mr. Vandenberg has also said that he is also considering doing the same thing to a Ferrari in the future. In case Ferrari people are reading this watch out for Mr. Peter Vandenberg when he arrives at your dealerships—just a word of caution.

He was successful known for his successful range of rotary aero-engines in World War I of which the most famous was the Bentley BR1. Volkswagen Group Audi division owned Bentley Motors since 1998.

Volkswagen AG is Europe’s largest automaker and ranked fourth as in the world following GM, Toyota and Ford. Volkswagen is renowned for its top-of-the-line automobiles and brand of some of the most quality auto parts including Volkswagen clutch disc. Bentley Motors is just one of the major subsidiaries of the German automaker.

Fly With the Bentley

Have you ever seen the winged “B” badge of the Bentley and felt like flying? If yes, you are not the only one! People all around the world dream of owning a Bentley and why not, its stature is just too big not to be desired! Bentley Motors was established in England in January 1919. The founder was Walter Owen Bentley. Walter Owen was always fascinated by combustible engines and racing motorcycles, like most young boys are, and the Bentley was an outcome of this passion.

Bentley Motors has a history full of turns and twists and quite an interesting one too! Lets skim through its pages.

The manufacturing of the Bentley started with a 3-litre engine car which was very advanced for its times. It had four cylinders, single overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder and twin-spark ignition via two magnetos. But it did make some noise. It is said, that this noise once irritated a nurse who was attending to a dying patient. To everyone’s surprise, a person present there had then said ‘A happy sound to die to”! Such was the beginning of the Bentley!

The Bentley was and is primarily known as a racing car. It has won many Le Mans trophies. The Le Mans is a 24-hour car endurance test held in France. It tests a car to it limits and those who can sustain the grill, command tremendous respect and awe in the automobile market. These races also provided a huge advertisement for the Bentley. The first Bentley, the 3-litre car, participated and came a very respectable 4th!

From then on, there was no looking back and Bentley motors went on to make some of the finest cars ever known. Sometimes the manufacturing was so slow that the cars were made just before delivery and at times even the demonstration cars had to be sold. But their popularity never ceased to soar. In reality fewer people bought them due to their high prices but still everyone secretly thought of taking control of one of these. After a few years, it was announced that Bentley Motors would retire from racing as they were falling short of money. As well as this, all the rash race driving was giving the common man a very bad impression about the car. Some people were wary of buying the car, as they saw it as a symbol of rough driving. Somewhat in order to break this image, Bentley Motors manufactured a bewitching limousine passenger car. But by this time, the great depression had taken its toll on Bentley Motors, leaving it in financial doldrums. Hence it was decided to sell the firm. Thus Rolls Royce took over Bentley Motors in a very dramatic manner in 1931. At that time Bentley was the most formidable rival of Rolls Royce and the world saw this as a mega deal for Rolls Royce. Actually it was good news for Bentley (in one way at least), that their baby would at least be in some experienced hands. Thus the Bentley was actually with Bentley Motors only till 1931.

The Volkswagen Group ,a German company, has been the owner of Bentley since 1998. The Bentleys are manufactured at the Crewe factory in England.

The various current and popular models of this car are Arnage, Azure, Continental GT, Continental Flying Spur and Continental GTC.

Luxury, elegance and comfort characterize all the Bentleys. Features like emergency fuel shut-off device, child safety door locks located on rear doors, engine immobilizer, front seatbelt height adjusters, fog lights, anti-theft protection, airbags with occupant sensors, computers keeping track of average speed, average fuel consumption, instantaneous fuel consumption and range for remaining fuel, keyless entry operated via key fob, tire pressure monitor, separate driver/front passenger climate controls, rear window defroster, heated washer system, bluetooth incorporated telephone system, electric foldable mirrors, ashtrays, full maps, remote controlled DVD, several speakers, headlight cleaners, leather seats, tinted glass ,a variety of interior lighting, etc. make the Bentley, a precious buy. The Azure also has a sunroof/moonroof and a removable/convertible top!

The Bentley cars are immediately recognizable by the huge headlights they flaunt. But unlike their easy to spot features, they are very difficult and intricate to make! The Bentley is known as a highly reliable, sturdy and versatile car. Versatile, as it combines uncompromising luxury with enviable performance and reliability.
